Current Mood:
Confused
Last week we decided to order some hardware for our current computers to get them compatible with the new Vista operating system. We were under the impression that it would not take much since Craig is pretty good with keeping our machines current, just needed a few things for mine, a bit more for Craig’s to move him away from AMD, and 2 copies of the Home Edition of Vista. We were also assuming that the whole transformation would take a couple of nights. Boy.. if we only knew what we know now, we may have waited until we had a few days off. Although I must say up front that the installation of Vista was pretty painless once we got things figured out.
The process started on Thursday night, we had hoped to get the swapping of parts and operating system installation done, then add a few more installations of games and stuff on Friday night before we enjoyed another weekend of playing World of Warcraft. LOL.. if it was only that easy. We started with mine since it needed the least amount of replacements, buttoned it up and set it aside to work on Craig’s. During the installation of his parts I ended up breaking the connectors on one of the hard drives, but it wasn’t enough to make the drive inoperable, so we continued. The next step was to boot the machine and setup RAID, well there was a problem. The motherboard he ordered didn’t support the configuration we were using, so we would need to get a different motherboard for him. We then worked on my machine, booted it up, no post. UGH!! Bad processor we thought, but then we checked and my motherboard was a few versions behind on it’s BIOS so we upgraded it, no luck it still wouldn’t post. We then tried my processor in Craig’s board and it worked. Now we both needed a new motherboard. We called it a night and went to watch some TV.
After work on Friday we drove to get our new boards. We were optimistic that things would go smoother than the previous night, but again we were wrong. Craig’s machine completed without any further issues, mine however was going to continue to be a big pain in the butt. After numerous attempts to install the operating system we have various levels of success. If we got it to complete an install it would lock up trying to install a device causing a blue screen, which sent us back to square one. It was so annoying and a definite test of our relationship. By the end of the whole ordeal we found that along with the original hardware we purchased I would also need a new sound card, video card and memory. Was all of the hassle worth it? I’m not sure yet, haven’t had enough time to check things out. There are a few things that I like that many might say “why didn’t you just get a Mac?”, like the sidebar gadgets and the animation of the windows opening, but to them I would say NEVER!!! We are a Windows PC family.
